Kalbarri Western Australia is a favourite family holiday destination also known for its adventure experiences on the water and land-based attractions. Situated where the Murchison River meets the Indian Ocean, Kalbarri has soaring red river gorges and protected swimming bays like the Blue Holes and Chinamans beach. Kalbarri is surrounded by the Kalbarri National Park in the Mid-West region of Western Australia’s coral coast and located 592 km north of Perth.
Along the coast, wind and wave erosion has exposed the sedimentary layers in the sandstone cliffs that plunge more than 100 metres to the ocean. Red Bluff, Mushroom Rock, Rainbow Valley, Eagle Gorge, Island Rock and the Natural Bridge are among the best-known features of this rugged coast.
Off the coast, you'll be treated to one of the most magical marine encounters as humpback whales and their calves slowly pass by on their annual migration, between June and November.
The Kalbarri National Park surrounds the lower reaches of the Murchison River, which has cut a magnificent 80 kilometre gorge through the red and white banded sandstone to create formations such as Nature’s Window, The Loop, Z-Bend and Hawks Head, with scenic gorge views at the Ross Graham Lookout and views of the town and river mouth at Meanarra Hill. The national park has superb walking trails, over 1000 species of wildflowers and with the completion of the new twin skywalks in the national park one step closer for 2020, Kalbarri Western Australia is the place to explore.
Hop on a river cruise, hire a paddleboat or hit the water in a kayak. Swim or surf from one of the many beaches. Throw in a line from the shore or jump aboard a fishing charter to chase the catch of a lifetime. You can take a scenic flight over the Kalbarri national park, coastline or Abrolhos Islands. You can bring your boat to the annual fishing competition, a 3 day event held on the March long weekend or the annual Kalbarri rock lobster festival combined with the Kalbarri adventurethon every June long weekend.
Just south of Kalbarri is Port Gregory, Hutt Lagoon (Kalbarri Pink Lake) and Horrocks, a laidback beach getaway with great swimming, fishing, surfing and windsurfing.
No trip is complete without breakfast with the pelicans - watch their daily feeding ritual on the foreshore at 8.45am. Have your camera ready and fully charged as there are plenty of opportunities to take some amazing photos!
Go on, take a six hour drive from Perth and discover why Kalbarri Western Australia is among the State's most popular holiday destination.
